“Whatever that family gives you is nothing compared to what you will lose.”
That line in THE ANCESTOR by Danielle Trussoni grabbed my attention and made me what to read what would happen to the protagonist Alberta Monte. It’s a brilliant mixture of gothic, mystery, and suspense with a dark family history at its core. Trusson pulled me in with her first-person point of view, which is not my favorite, and with eerie twists, unexpected revelations, and an ancient history family lineage with a darker past, I was enthralled the whole time.
Some of the elements I loved were the personal diary accounts of family member Alberta found, and where Trusson’s writing really shines to me. Those diary pages were full of emotion and revealed so much that I wished there were more. Add in a creepy mansion, isolated in the mountains with no way out, and strange family members, well you have one interesting story,
THE ANCESTOR was one of those books that, after reading a few chapters before bed and falling asleep, I kept thinking about what dark secrets or tragedy Alberta would discover. I thoroughly enjoyed this story that I finished it in two nights. If you enjoyed REBECCA by Daphne du Maurier with a twist of something extra, I would recommend this book.
