I just finished THE DEMON CROWN by James Rollins, and as usual he had me up way past my bedtime reading. In this installment of the Sigma Force series, Rollins raises the stakes not just for the survival of mankind but for the Sigma Force team, especially for Gray and Seichan.
I enjoy how Rollins blends history, technology, and science to create a thrilling read that not only entertains but teaches as well. In this book, Rollins creates an ancient and terrifying threat that has been buried a century ago beneath the National Mall. When it is unleashed, it may wipe out not only mankind but most of life on Earth. I don’t want to give away the nature of this threat but it’s a menace that is an efficient hunter, adaptable, spreads easily, strong, smart, and once it has its prey there is no chance of survival. Deadly is the perfect word to describe them. I will admit I found the chapters explaining the “threat” fascinating and more fun to read than the action scenes. Rollins always makes a teaching subject fun to read—and creepy. Besides a dangerous and unstoppable enemy, we see more of Seichan and Gray’s relationship and discover something that change it even more. Old enemies return as well for vengeance, complicating matters even more.
THE DEMON CROWN is an intense, action packed thriller where the Sigma Force raises against ticking time clock to stop an ancient species from reconquering the world they once ruled. It was a fun read and great addition to the Sigma Force series.
